Three Sisters Gardening

Today we started our first in a series of three sisters gardens. We did corn, pole beans and cucumbers. If you have never heard of a three sisters garden, it's time you have. It's companion planting that according  to Iroquois legend, corn, beans, and squash are three inseparable sisters who will only grow and thrive together. This tradition of interplanting corn, beans and squash in the same mounds. Widespread among Native American farming societies, is a sophisticated, sustainable system that provided long-term soil fertility and a healthy diet to generations.

Hen Friends

Dryer Free

So we did it! On Monday we returned our dryer to Rent A Center. Too bad we can't get our money back. But, in an effort to save money and be more self suffecient we have become dryer free. We have a rortary clothesline in the backyard. Since it was raining yesterday and today a bit I hung some clothes on the shower rod and got a small drying rack. Our gas bill will be dropping! I am looking into a few more different indoor racks. I like to having shirts, skirts and dresses to dry inside. Black clothes fade less inside as well.  But, this will asll do for now.

New Friend

 

Yesterday we added a new friend. Her name is Nixie. She is a White  Rock Hen. She lays an egg a day. I know that isn't much for our family of seven. But, if we save them all week we can all have one egg with our pancakes on Sunday. We have a nice size area fenced off for her and are considering fencing off another area for more hens. She likes to eat other hens...so she has to be separate. Since it is just her for now, she has free roam of the backyard during the day. As you can see Maggie has already fallen in love with her.

Weekend Wrap Up

Birthday Party for a cousin

Unicorns were in high demand.

...as were sharks.

park fun with a new friend visiting from Austin.

It was almost like they had always been friends.

 

There was also mad amount of thrift shopping this weekend. There was lots of planting of edibles. Sunday was so amazing. I took Maggie with me to go and visit my friend Tanni, we had not seen each other in 19 years. It was like there was never gap in our being together. When I was in 10th grade, she was my best friend. She was an amazing non-judgemental feminist hippie. Oh wait...she still is. Never in my life have I had such an amazing girl friend. I am beyond ecstatic that we have connected again.  We will hang out again this week before she is Austin bound.

Life is good.

Random Things

I love the feel of the earth beneath my feet. The damp cool earth between my toes reminds me of my Creators comfort. Of course in the photos above I have sandals onm but I took them off for a few moments. I am under th impressions shoes are required there.

Last summer as I walked through the rows of corn, squash and tomatoes I would dig my heals in the soil. My mind would escape to dreams of raised beds, fruit and veggies for the taking. Abundance to share, knowledge, fellowship and community. This year I am hoping to start building upon those dreams. Start sharing more of what we yield and help those who seek knowledge and fellowship with all.

As the corn gets taller, so will the children...
